Sustainability has been part of Kivitasku’s operations from the very beginning. For over 23 years, natural values, ecological choices, and appreciation for craftsmanship have guided both the development and everyday life at Kivitasku. The Karelian-inspired environment, buildings, and services have been designed to respect nature, local culture, and a sustainable way of living.
At Kivitasku, sustainability is not a separate project —it is a way of operating every day.
Building with Natural and Recycled Materials
The buildings at Kivitasku are constructed primarily from natural materials, such as wood and stone sourced from the surrounding area. The principles of sustainable development and respect for craftsmanship are strongly reflected in the construction:
- Wall bricks originate from the old conservatory in Jyväskylä and from the cobblestone streets of Voionmaa
- Quarry materials have been utilized in several buildings
- Wood materials come from the owners' own forest and a local sawmill in Muurame
- Walls and log structures have been handcrafted
Ecological Practices in Everyday Life
Sustainability is also visible in Kivitasku’s accommodation and food services, as well as in daily life around the courtyard:
- Food waste is minimal –animals make use of the leftovers
- Remaining organic waste is composted for reuse
- Compost soil is used in the garden
- Fertiliser produced by chickens and sheep is used in cultivation
- Sauna water comes from a private groundwater well
Waste sorting is part of everyday life: glass, metal, plastic, paper, and cardboard are all recycled. Guests can also sort their waste at the recycling point in the yard.
Heating is provided by geothermal energy, eco-friendly electricity, and heat-storing fireplaces.
Craftsmanship and Domestic Materials
Kivitasku values Finnish craftsmanship and natural materials. Many products are made locally and according to sustainable principles:
- Products are made from wool sourced from Kivitasku's own sheep
- Dyeing is done by hand
- Materials from Finnish wool producers are also used
- Natural recycled materials are utilised
Wall textiles and handmade “tonttu” figures are inspired by Finnish nature, the Kalevala, and folk traditions. The products are unique, durable, and made from natural materials that can be recycled at the end of their lifecycle.
The wool from Kivitasku’s own sheep is the main material in their handicrafts and an essential part of their sustainable production chain.
Sustainable Tourism as Part of Development
Kivitasku participates in Visit Finland’s sustainable tourism training program, which aims to further strengthen responsible practices. The program is expected to be completed in 2026.
In addition, the goal is to obtain the international Green Key certification, which indicates environmentally responsible operations in the tourism sector.
However, sustainability has been part of Kivitasku’s operations from the very beginning—since 1995.
Nature-Based Activities and Experiences
Kivitasku encourages environmentally friendly ways of moving and enjoying nature.
On the premises, it is possible to:
- Rent bicycles
- Take excursions in the ridge and lake landscapes of Muurame
- Explore nearby nature attractions
Muurame is located close to Jyväskylä, the shores of Lake Päijänne, and the archipelago landscapes of Säynätsalo. The area offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities and enjoying nature.
Sustainability Work Continues
At Kivitasku, sustainability is never complete—it is constantly evolving. Every choice, building project, service, and daily practice aims to ensure that operations remain sustainable in the future.
Respect for nature, appreciation of craftsmanship, and locality are part of Kivitasku’s identity—now and in the future.
